The Top 10 Essential Elements
of an Artist Website
by Clint Watson

Dear {{FirstName}},

We have updated our top 10 essential elements of an artist website, first published a bit over a year ago.  We have changed the list slightly to reflect today's landscape and the more widespread adoption of RSS technology.  So, as of today, the top 10 essential elements of an artist website are:

1.  A Domain Name Containing Your Own Name

2.  Clean and Consistent Design

3.  Easy, Text-Based Navigation

4.  Contact Information on Every Single Page

5.  A Join Email List link that handles subscriptions automatically

6.  Large Portfolios are divided into collections

7.  Buying is easy for the customer

8.  High-Quality Images

9.  Site information is Always Current

10. An RSS Feed of your new artwork

We added number 10, the RSS Feed as an essential element.  It replaces our previous number 10 item "current biography", which is really just a sub-category of number nine anyway.

To learn why RSS is important, read:
Feed your artwork to your fans with RSS

Sincerely,

Clint Watson
Software Craftsman and Art Fanatic

PS - Of course, our service, FineArtStudioOnline, facilitates as many of these items as possible...including automatic RSS feeds.

    You are the music, revisited:

    Karen Cooper Wrote:

    Hello,
I just read two newsletter entries in rapid succession: Lori Woodward Simon's article on 'what a gallery really wants' and Clint Black's views on the commonalities of artists and hackers:)
Lori's article spoke of "If you haven't gotten to the point where you've arrived at a style of your own, take however much time you need to get there". And with my odd sequencing of articles, Clint's countered with the pss. note of "how does one really ever know that they are a master?"
Wouldn't it be lovely if there was a point system for such matters? "You have attained 83 of 100 possible points in the game of arriving at a style of your own". Better yet, "you have compiled 97 of the 100 points needed to be a master".
I truely love color, but this is one area where I would settle for black and white!
I appreciate this newsletter---sure wish I could get it to come to my inbox!
    Cooper

"You Don't Have to Be a Webmaster
to Have a First Class Website"

"Thank you for the excellent service you have created for artists. I have received scores of compliments on my website.

More importantly, my work is now reaching people around the globe; I have been contacted by galleries in England and France as well as artists and collectors from as far away as Australia and South Africa.

Your templates have allowed me to have a first class website with very little work. It is easy to upload images and to maintain the website...and I didn't have to become a webmaster to learn how to do it.I couldn't be more pleased!"

    FOCAL POINT:  beret

beret - A round, soft brimless tam (hat). It fits snugly, and is often worn angled to one side. It has long been a traditional mode of head-covering throughout Europe, and now other parts of the world. Men, women and children of all walks have worn it, and continue to, but it has been popularly associated with artists since the nineteenth century, to the extent that the stereotypical artist is depicted wearing a beret.

How to Make a Living as an Artist

You have been told that it is impossible to make a living as an artist, but it is not!

It is already being done. I'm Colin Ruffell and I have been doing it for many years, and so have my inner circle of friends and colleagues. We share our secrets here with you in my book, 'How to make a living as an artist'.

    Facts:
    * You could be a full time professional artist, like me with forty years in my studio, and still going strong!
    * You could be published worldwide.
    * You could have regular exhibitions of your work in many countries on five continents.
    * You could have international sales of your work grossing about half a million dollars a year.
    * You could be your own boss, as an artist, and enjoy the good life.
    * Like me.

"Hi Colin, Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I finally for once in my life after reading the majority of your book, I finally feel like I have a sense of direction now. I love the way your are very straight forward and funny. I have tried to read other business books and talk to other artists, but no one has given me a solid game plan. I have been lost for 31 years. Thank you for helping find my way."
