The concept of "public art" seems intimidating for a little old oil painter like me. (ok, maybe I am not that old!) But I can tell you that most cities have an art requirement for any new developments. For example, a town nearby requires all newly constructed commercial buildings to allocate 1 percent of the total budget for art for the project. The art usually is displayed in public spaces and is sculptures, murals, etc. Local artists are usually preferred and this represents a huge opportunity for artists.
