Thanks Keith for sharing your insight. I would add that there are many public art opportunities that seek existing work as well. These do not require site-specific proposals. I have had several of my paintings purchased for 3 separate Austin libraries. None of them were commissioned, but purchased from my existing inventory of works. For these types of public art opportunities there might be a theme or size requirement depending on the public space, but this is another option for artists to explore.
